Comparing hair transplants to scalp micropigmentation

With so many hair loss options out there, it's worth taking some time to compare scalp micropigmentation to other solutions.

Let's first compare the most popular solution out there:

Hair transplants

Hair transplants are by far the most sought after solution for anyone looking to regain their lost hair.

If you are definitely wanting real hair, this is probably a better solution for you than scalp micropigmentation.

  • Can give you real hair
  • Can add real hair density to thinning patches
  • May not need further treatment
  • Can give a natural appearance if done correctly
  • Minimum downtime after surgery

  • SURGERY: Hair transplants are a surgical procedure and can take several hours
  • SCARS: You will get scars with which every type of transplant you have
  • GRAFT FAILURE: Sometimes the grafts fail to take, resulting in tissue death of the skin grafts OR along the line of the surgical wound.
  • UNEVEN GROWTH: Occasionally the hair may not grow evenly or as expected, requiring more grafts and surgery
  • FOLLICULITIS: This is inflammation of the hair follicles and can be a potential side effect.
  • INFECTION: In rare cases, post-operative infections can occur. This can present as pus, inflammation and swelling around the incision area.

Compare: Scalp micropigmentation

On the other hand, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a proven safe, non-invasive and non-surgical process that uses strategically placed ink in place of hair follicles to create the illusion of a shaved head with stubble.

  • Can give the illusion of a more dense head of hair
  • Non-surgical
  • No scars
  • No down time
  • Cost effective
  • Immediate results
  • Cover and camouflage scars

  • Cannot give real hair
  • Fades over time/ needs touch-ups every year or so
  • Does not look good if done by an unskilled technician
  • For full scalp micropigmentation needs to be kept .5 mm or less for best look

If the following conditions are okay with you, in my opinion a hair transplant would be a better option for you.

IF you have enough donor hair;

IF you are okay with having scars that may need covering;

IF you can accept you may have to take finasteride for a lengthy amount of time to ensure transplant hair growth.

Otherwise, SMP is probably the solution you are looking for.
