HOW CAN I DO A TRIAL RUN TO SEE IF SMP IS RIGHT?
Start with a Patch Test and see if SMP is for you.
SMP, otherwise known as hair tattooing, is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure for both men and women who suffer from varying degrees of hair loss, thinning hair, receding hairlines, alopecia, balding, and FUE hair transplant scarring, and FUT hair transplant scarring. The procedure is done by injecting pigment into the scalp and replicating hair follicles.
Pricing is based on the level of hair loss, which is different for each client. As such the costs can vary from a few hundred dollars up to $3,500 depending on your type of hair loss. Set up a free consultation to get a personalized quote based on your hair loss needs.
Yes. Whether the scars are left from an FUE hair-transplant procedure, FUT hair-transplant procedure, or other surgical scars. By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending their colour around the scarring area, Hair Transplant and any other surgical scars can be “camouflaged” and rendered almost undetectable.
YOUR COSMETIC SCALP TREATMENT FOR AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION TO HAIR TRANSPLANT SCARS
Camouflage your hair transplant scars with non-invasive SMP.
No. However, many Headways patients have had successful hair transplants performed by surgeons and then have either their transplant scar camouflaged with SMP and/or hair density treatments that add density to the transplanted area.
SMP is a form of semi-permanent cosmetics or semi-permanent makeup and can last for several years without a need for any “touch-up” treatments. This cosmetic hair loss solution will not wash or rub off during this time.
Following your treatment(s) you should expect the results to last several years. Throughout that time, you will likely gradually begin to see a slight lightening of the ink. This is not a discoloration but a fading of the non-permanent ink used in SMP. At this point, it is recommended that clients return for a “touch-up” visit.
YOUR SEMI-PERMANENT SOLUTION FOR IMPROVING SELF-CONFIDENCE
Stay confident for longer when you only need touch-ups every few years.
The SMP treatment typically takes 2-4 hours per session depending on your degree of hair loss.
A non-invasive and non-surgical procedure, SMP requires no downtime. You will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions. Following your treatment, it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for up to 2-3 days post-session. That said, any redness you experience will most likely dissipate within 1 day.
SMP more often than not requires more than one treatment to attain optimal effects. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss and/or hair transplant scarring. The treatments should typically be spaced between 7-14 days apart.

A non-invasive process tailored to work just for you.
No. SMP is a form of semi-permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattoo ink, standard SMP pigment contains no additional colourants or additives and will only lighten or fade, not discolour over an extended time. SMP also utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, which is designed specifically for SMP.
The answer to that question depends on the pattern and extent of your hair loss. Some clients can maintain a longer length of hair while the SMP results add density to the existing hair by camouflaging the scalp and making it appear less prevalent through the existing hair. If there is a strong pattern of hair loss, however, cutting your hair shorter will have the best results.
Yes. SMP can match the shade of pigment to a broad range of skin tones with great success.
SMP IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR YOUR HAIR LOSS SOLUTION
You’ll stop hiding under your caps.
No heavy sweating or intense exercise is recommended for 4-5 days after your SMP treatment.
For most clients, the pain is quite minimal. SMP is consistently less painful than traditional tattoos and most certainly less painful than a hair transplant procedure. Following the day of your session, it is most likely that you won’t experience any further discomfort at all.
The SMP clinic is located in Edmonton, Alberta. Clients seeking non-surgical hair loss solutions from all over Western Canada including Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta are more than welcome.
YOUR MEDICATION-FREE HAIR LOSS SOLUTION
SMP is a non-invasive and drug-free cosmetic service.
The equipment used for a scalp treatment is considered micro-pigmentation or “permanent cosmetic” equipment. There are many different brands and designs and equipment including a digital power source, a handpiece, and disposable micro needles for the insertion of pigment. Most technicians of SMP use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.
Is it okay to continue Propecia and/or Rogaine for my hair loss after my treatment?
Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their scalp pigmentation procedure. Topical minoxidil (Rogaine) should not be used for 30 days after your treatment to ensure that the pigmentation sets and that there’s no unnecessary irritation on your scalp
No. A free consultation is available for anyone looking to learn about how SMP can help them with their hair loss and to discuss their options.

LEAVE YOUR CAP AT HOME
Stay fresh with a professional and low-maintenance buzz-cut look.
SMP is a little different than a traditional tattoo as a form of semi-permanent cosmetics, using a different type of ink and toolset which are designed specifically for SMP to mimic the root of a hair follicle.
No scrubbing, shampooing, or shaving over the treated area is recommended for 4-5 days after your SMP treatment.
BLEND YOUR HAIR TRANSPLANT SCARS FOR A SEAMLESS LOOK
You don't have to continue dealing with the aesthetic of hair transplant scarring.
Yes. Wearing a hat is fine immediately following your SMP treatment and any time thereafter.
Avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for approximately 28 days following your SMP treatment.
Although the clinic is located in Edmonton, many clients are from all over Alberta and Western Canada. If travel is out of the question, Headways can recommend a colleague near you if available.

Headways has been providing SMP services to clients throughout Alberta and Western Canada for over a decade. When choosing a SMP practitioner make sure you do your homework and find the best available technician.
No, the SMP treatment will not grow your hair back. However, the SMP treatment will give you the look of short hair or a “buzz-cut”. Keeping your hair at a shorter length is recommended to create the most natural outcome.
In theory, it is a “tattoo” but it is quite different from traditional tattoos, including those on the scalp. SMP or “hair tattooing” is the art of applying hair follicle-sized dots under your skin, providing the illusion of very short hair follicles on your head strategically to either maximize the coverage of your existing hair or provide the illusion of a short-cut full head of hair.

The needles are specifically made for SMP and they give a nice round point, which is something a “tattoo” needle doesn’t always give. Tattoo needles can give more of a “scratch” if used for SMP. The SMP needles come in different sizes which are used on different areas of the scalp. Of course, all the needles are disposed of in a Sharps container after one use.
No. SMP does not cause hair loss but rather is one of the leading non-surgical and non-invasive hair loss solutions for men and women. This procedure is a semi-permanent solution to the problem of hair loss, which causes so much stress and disruption to the lives of those suffering from it.
No, SMP does not damage existing hair follicles. Hair follicles are rooted much deeper in your scalp than the SMP needle is inserted to deposit the pigmentation so the root of the hair follicle is unaffected by the needle and the procedure as a whole.
