Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a series of frequently asked questions regarding my practice and Scalp Micro-pigmentation in general. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me!
What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation, otherwise known as hair tattooing, is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure for both men and women who suffer from varying degrees of hair loss, thinning hair, receding hairlines, alopecia, balding, and FUE hair transplant scarring, and FUT hair transplant scarring. The procedure is done by injecting pigment into the scalp, replicating hair follicles.
How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?
Pricing is based on the level of hair loss, which is different for each client. As such the costs can vary from a few hundred dollars to over one thousand dollars depending on your type of hair loss. I always recommend setting up a free consultation so that I can evaluate your case and provide a personalized quote based on your hair loss needs.
Can Scalp Micropigmentation camouflage FUE Hair Transplant Scars and FUT Hair Transplant Scars?
Yes! I’ve treated many clients looking to hide their hair transplant scars, whether they be left from an FUE hair-transplant procedure, FUT hair-transplant procedure, or other surgical scars. By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending their colour around the scarring area, Hair Transplant and any other surgical scars can be ‘camouflaged’ and rendered almost undetectable.
Do you work directly with any Hair Transplant Surgeons in Edmonton?
Although I don’t work directly with any given Hair Transplant Surgeons in Edmonton or Alberta in general, many of my patients have had successful hair transplants performed by surgeons and have come to me to have either their transplant scar camouflaged with SMP and/or hair density treatments that add density to the transplanted area.
How many SMP treatments should I expect?
Scalp micropigmentation more often than not requires more than one treatment to attain optimal effects. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss and/or hair transplant scarring. The treatments should typically be space between 10-20 days apart.
How long does scalp micropigmentation take?
The Scalp Micropigmentation treatment typically takes 2-4 hours per session depending on your degree of hair loss.
How long do the results last?
Following your treatment(s) you should expect for the results to last several years. Over the course of that time, you will likely gradually begin to see slight lightening of the ink. This is not a discoloration but a fading of the non-permanent ink used in SMP. At this point I recommend that my clients return for a “touch-up” visit.
Do I need to take time off work?
Being a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure, Scalp micropigmentation Requires no down time. You will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions. Following your treatment, it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for up to 2-3 days post session. That said, any redness you experience will most likely dissipate within 1 day.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation permanent?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of semi-permanent cosmetics or semi-permanent makeup and can lasts for several years without a need for any “touch-up” treatments. This cosmetic hair loss solution will not wash or rub off during this time.
Will my Scalp Micropigmentation results change colour like tattoos?
No. Scalp micropigmentation is a form of semi-permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattoo ink, standard SMP pigment contains no additional colorants or additives and will only lighten or fade, not discolor over an extended time. Scalp micropigmentation also utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, which is designed specifically for Scalp micropigmentation.
I still have some hair, do I need to shave it?
The answer to that question depends on the pattern and extent of your hair loss. Some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair while the SMP results add density to the existing hair by camouflaging the scalp and making it appear less prevalent through the existing hair. If there is a strong pattern of hair loss however, cutting your hair shorter will have the best results.
Does Scalp Micropigmentation work a range of skin shades?
Yes! I’ve been able to match the shade of pigment to a broad range of skin tones in my clients with great success!
How long until I can work-out and sweat after the scalp micropigmentation treatment?
I always recommend no heavy sweating or intense exercise for 4-5 days after your scalp micropigmentation treatment.
Does the scalp micropigmentation procedure hurt?
For most clients, the pain is quite minimal. SMP is consistently less painful than traditional tattoos and most certainly less painful than a hair transplant procedure. Following the day of your session, it is most likely that you won’t experience any further discomfort at all.
Where is Headways Hair Loss Solutions located?
Our SMP clinic is located in Edmonton, Alberta but we see clients seeking non-surgical hair loss solutions from all over Western Canada including Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta!
What equipment is used for a Scalp Micropigmentation procedure?
The equipment used for a scalp treatment is considered micropigmentation or “permanent cosmetic” equipment. There are many different brands and designs and equipment includes a digital power source, a hand-piece, and disposable micro needles for the insertion of pigment. Most technicians of Scalp Micropigmentation use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.
Is it okay to continue Propecia and/or Rogaine for my hair loss after my treatment?
Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their scalp pigmentation procedure. topical minoxidil (Rogaine) should not be used for 30 days after your treatment to ensure that the pigmentation sets and that there’s no unnecessary irritation on your scalp.
Do you charge for a scalp micropigmentation consultation?
No, I offer a free consultation for anyone looking to learn about how scalp micropigmentation can help them with their hair loss and to discuss their options.
What is the difference between scalp micropigmentation and scalp tattoo or hair tattoo?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a little different than a traditional tattoo as a form of semi-permanent cosmetics, using a different type of ink and toolset which are designed specifically for SMP to mimic the root of a hair follicle.
Do you have Scalp Micropigmentation Before and After Pictures?
Yes, absolutely! Please see my gallery here https://www.headways.ca/portfolio/ or our Instagram profile @headways.canada.
How long until I can shampoo and / or shave the area treated with Scalp Micropigmentation?
I recommend no scrubbing, shampooing, or shaving over the treated area for 4-5 days after your scalp micropigmentation treatment.
Can I wear a hat following a scalp micropigmentation treatment?
Yes, absolutely. Wearing a hat is totally fine immediately following your SMP treatment and any time thereafter.
Can I go swimming, sit in a sauna, or steam room after my scalp micropigmentation treatment?
I recommend avoiding chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for approximately 28 days following your scalp micropigmentation treatment.
Do you have a scalp micropigmentation clinic located anywhere else in Alberta like Calgary or Red Deer?
Although my clinic is located in Edmonton, many of my customers are from all over Alberta and Western Canada! And of course I have a strong network of SMP practitioners all over Alberta and Western Canada (Several of whom I’ve trained myself) and would be happy to recommend a colleague near you if you’re not able to travel to my Scalp Micropigmentation clinic in Edmonton.
Who is the best micropigmentation specialist in Edmonton?
I’d love to think that ‘the best’ is defined as someone with the most experience and provides the best results for their clients. I’ve been providing scalp micropigmentation services to clients throughout Alberta and Western Canada! I’ve also trained other SMP practitioners who now practice throughout Alberta and Western Canada. Always do your homework! Ask for and review a practitioner’s portfolio of work to determine if that practitioner is right for you.
Will scalp micropigmentation grow my hair back?
No, the scalp micropigmentation treatment will not grow your hair back. However, the SMP treatment will give you the look of short hair or ‘buzz-cut’. I recommend keeping your hair at a shorter length to create the most natural outcome.
Is scalp micropigmentation a ‘hair tattoo’?
In theory, it is a ‘tattoo’ but it is quite different from traditional tattoos, including those on the scalp. I believe scalp micropigmentation or ‘hair tattooing’ is the art of applying hair follicle sized dots under your skin, providing the illusion of very short hair follicles on your head strategically to either maximize the coverage of your existing hair or provide the illusion of a short-cut full head of hair.
What Kind of Needles Do You Use for Hair Tattoos?
The needles I use are specifically made for Scalp Micro-Pigmentation and I find they give a nice round point, which is something a ‘tattoo’ needle doesn’t always give. Tattoo needles can give more of a ‘scratch’ if used for SMP. The SMP needles I use come in different sizes which I use on different areas of the scalp. Of course, all the needles are disposed of in a Sharps container after one use.
Does Scalp Micropigmentation Cause Hair Loss?
No, Scalp Micropigmentation does not cause hair loss but rather is one of the leading non-surgical and non-invasive hair loss solutions for men and women. This procedure is a semi-permanent solution to the problem of hair loss, which causes so much stress and disruption to the lives of those suffering from it.
Does Scalp Micropigmentation Damage Existing Hair Follicles?
No, Scalp Micropigmentation does not damage existing hair follicles. Hair follicles are rooted much deeper in your scalp than the Scalp Micropigmentation needle is inserted to deposit the pigmentation so the root of the hair follicle is unaffected by the needle and the procedure as a whole.
